Faye Valentine

Overview

Faye Valentine is a gambler and bounty hunter in Cowboy Bebop who joins Spike and Jet's travelling household. Violet hair, yellow clothing and a red jacket identify her design, and Megumi Hayashibara provides her Japanese voice. Her official anime profile gives her age as 23 and her birthday as August 14. The age field follows that stated value rather than calculating an age from her period of cryogenic sleep. She debuts in Session 3's casino case. Skilled at cheating and determined to obtain money, she also uses firearms and pilots her own craft. The Red Tail is officially a heavily armed vertical-takeoff-and-landing vehicle, fitted with Vulcan cannons and revolving gun launchers. Faye can pursue a target herself rather than relying only on bargaining or deception. Cooperation with the others is inconsistent. In Session 7 she tries to collect a bounty independently; in Session 12 she takes the contents of the Bebop's safe and leaves. Such decisions cause disputes and help set subsequent investigations in motion. Past events—mild story spoilers: Faye awoke from cryogenic sleep without her earlier memories and burdened by debt. Session 15 revisits that awakening and her relationship with the lawyer Whitney. An old Betamax tape in Session 18 supplies evidence of her childhood; in Session 24, the Merlion visible in the recording leads her and Ed to Earth. The search for her own history develops alongside, rather than merely as part of, the crew's bounty work. In the animated film she witnesses the Mars terrorist incident while pursuing a target, and her recording becomes an investigative lead. Daniella Pineda plays Faye in Netflix's 2021 adaptation, with Hayashibara returning for the Japanese dub. The age and characterization above follow the anime version. The film's investigation also puts Faye at risk: while pursuing Vincent she is captured herself. Obtaining a lead does not place her safely outside the danger.
