Synopsis

BLUE LOCK begins with a proposed answer to Japan's pursuit of a World Cup title: a striker who can score when the result depends on an individual decision. The Japan Football Union gathers 300 high-school forwards at a training facility called Blue Lock. Its aim is not simply to assemble a strong team, but to produce the world's best striker through competition. Elimination also ends a player's eligibility for Japan's national team, putting each participant's ambition at stake. The central character, Yoichi Isagi, is an unknown high-school forward who dreams of becoming Japan's leading striker. Inside the program, he has to discover how he can create goals himself. Reading the field and adapting his play to other competitors become important parts of his development. Different technical strengths and decisions collide, while teammates can also be rivals for survival. As the selections advance, the story moves beyond internal competition toward a test of the project itself. In the second anime season, 35 surviving players prepare to face Japan's U-20 national team. The program's continued existence is at stake. Individual ambition must now contribute to a side capable of winning an actual match against established opponents.

Publication history

Written by Muneyuki Kaneshiro and illustrated by Yusuke Nomura, the original manga began in issue 35 of Kodansha's Weekly Shonen Magazine, released on August 1, 2018. The first collected volume followed on November 16 that year. Serialization, collected-volume publication and the later television debut are separate milestones: the work's first publication belongs to the 2018 manga. The launch announcement already described a project aimed at a Japanese World Cup victory and an approach combining sport with battle-action imagery. Kodansha publishes the English edition. Its volume-one catalogue distinguishes digital and print editions, listing June 21, 2022 for the paperback. Japanese and English volume availability should therefore be checked separately rather than assuming matching publication schedules. An official companion manga, Blue Lock -EPISODE Nagi-, shifts attention to Seishiro Nagi. Kodansha announced serialization from the July issue of Bessatsu Shonen Magazine, released June 9, 2022, with Kota Sannomiya handling the art. The spin-off reached its final chapter in the August issue released July 9, 2025. This conclusion applies to the spin-off, not to the entire main series. It provides another perspective on the story surrounding Nagi and Reo.

Creators

Story creator Muneyuki Kaneshiro has also worked on As the Gods Will and We Did It. In an interview published by Osaka's Taisho Ward, he described discussing dialogue and panel layouts with his artistic collaborators and adjusting the staging when something feels wrong. His account presents the partnership as a process of drawing out an artist's strengths, rather than simply requiring a fixed interpretation of his draft. A 2019 conversation with DAYS creator Tsuyoshi Yasuda gives a more specific account of BLUE LOCK's direction. Kaneshiro recalled wanting to focus on forwards while differentiating the project from another football manga in the same magazine. He also credited Nomura's skill with battle action for making that element stronger than he initially expected. Both the subject and the creative partnership helped shape the resulting work. In a separate interview for aspiring manga creators, Kaneshiro described combining recognizable behavior with an unexpected side. Isagi begins as an ordinary teenager, whereas Barou's extreme behavior is later complicated by frustration and failure; the order in which those aspects are introduced differs.

Media expansion

The first television anime began airing in October 2022 and was announced as 24 episodes across two consecutive cours. The second season, BLUE LOCK VS. U-20 JAPAN, began on October 5, 2024 and comprised 14 episodes, advancing to the match against Japan's U-20 team. These are adaptations of the manga, and the selection stage and a player's position within the story should not be conflated between seasons. BLUE LOCK: Episode Nagi was announced for a Japanese theatrical opening on April 19, 2024; Kodansha's subsequent spin-off completion announcement also confirms its 2024 theatrical release. Unlike the television series centered on Isagi, the film adapts the story from Nagi's side. On September 27, 2026, the official website described the third television season, BLUE LOCK Neo Egoist League, as in production. It should be distinguished from the already-aired first and second seasons. The live-action BLUE LOCK film opened on August 7, 2026. Toho's opening-day event report identifies participants including Fumiya Takahashi as Yoichi Isagi, Kaito Sakurai as Meguru Bachira, K as Seishiro Nagi and Keito Tsuna as Reo Mikage. This live-action production is separate from the animated feature, with a different cast and approach to performance. The stage adaptations also continue. The fifth production, subtitled Neo Egoist League Opening, credits Naohiro Ise for its script and direction and advertises Tokyo, Osaka and Aichi performances in October 2026. At the September 27 research cutoff, those performances are scheduled rather than completed. Among the games, Rudel's training simulation BLUE LOCK Project: World Champion launched in Japan on December 30, 2022 and in English on April 23, 2024. By contrast, the operator of BLUE LOCK BLAZE BATTLE states that all services ended on March 31, 2026 and that an offline edition was not provided. The existence of an adaptation should not be confused with its present availability.

Behind the scenes

The manga received the shonen-category award at the 45th Kodansha Manga Awards in 2021. This is recognition of the work by a publishing award, distinct from player rankings or competition results within the story. Licensed collaborations extend beyond football. A Sanrio Characters collaboration described by Kodansha in 2024 paired Isagi with Hello Kitty and Bachira with Pompompurin, among others. A representative explained that the pairings considered affinities between characters. These are choices made for a merchandise project, not additions to the fictional world's relationships or canon. There are also documented links between character creation and real footballers. In a May 2026 interview, Kaneshiro named Filippo Inzaghi as a model for Isagi, Ryo Miyaichi for Chigiri and Mario Balotelli for Barou. These remarks identify creative reference points; they do not make the real players' biographies or personalities interchangeable with those of their fictional counterparts.
