Synopsis
Takumi Fujiwara works at his father's tofu shop and has spent years delivering tofu before dawn in a Toyota AE86 on the roads of Mount Akina. He does not initially identify as a racer, but his driving ability shocks the local teams that challenge the mountain. Friends, rivals, mechanics, and the Takahashi brothers draw him into organized street-racing battles across different passes. The story uses each matchup to teach the viewer how skill, car setup, weather, road knowledge, and discipline interact.
Publication history
Initial D adapts Shūichi Shigeno's Kodansha manga. The first television anime debuted in 1998, followed by further television stages, films, OVAs, and the Final Stage. The early anime's CG driving scenes were notable for their era, and licensed English releases brought several stages to overseas audiences. A separate New Initial D the Movie trilogy retold the beginning of the manga from 2014 to 2016.
Creators
Shūichi Shigeno created the original manga. Across its long animated history, Initial D has involved multiple studios and production teams, reflecting the changing technology used to depict cars and racing. The adaptations place unusual emphasis on driving lines, braking, tire behavior, and engine tuning. Its energetic Eurobeat soundtrack is inseparable from the series' race sequences, creating a specific audiovisual identity rather than generic sports scoring.
Media expansion
The franchise includes the manga, multiple television stages, Extra Stage OVAs, feature films, the New Initial D the Movie trilogy, arcade and console games, soundtracks, model cars, and the related successor work MF GHOST. Because licensing differs widely by country and stage, current availability should be checked locally. The 1998 First Stage is the basic entry point for Takumi's story.
Behind the scenes
The Japanese title is read Initial D, even though it is written with the characters for "initial letter D." Takumi's AE86, often called the Eight-Six, became an enduring icon of the series and of enthusiast car culture. The show depicts illegal street racing; its appeal lies in fictional competition and technical storytelling, not in endorsing dangerous driving on public roads.
