Synopsis

Hanamichi Sakuragi is a high-school delinquent with no basketball experience when he joins Shohoku High's team after meeting Haruko Akagi. His size and raw athleticism are obvious, but he must learn the unglamorous basics of dribbling, defending, rebounding, and trusting teammates. Alongside captain Takenori Akagi, point guard Ryota Miyagi, forward Hisashi Mitsui, and star Kaede Rukawa, Sakuragi grows from a comic outsider into a player who can care about the game itself.

Publication history

The television anime adapts Takehiko Inoue's long-running basketball manga. Toei Animation produced the television series, which first aired in 1993. The original series became a foundational sports-anime title through broadcast, home video, and later international licensing. Inoue returned to write and direct the 2022 CG-animated feature THE FIRST SLAM DUNK, which brought a major game from the manga to the screen and received a global streaming release.

Creators

Takehiko Inoue created the manga and wrote and directed THE FIRST SLAM DUNK. The original television adaptation shaped a generation of sports-anime viewers with an emphasis on character comedy, competitive momentum, and basketball fundamentals. The later film changes viewpoint and visual technique, using 3D animation to bring game movement and a key character's interior life into focus.

Media expansion

The franchise includes the original manga, the 1993 television series, earlier short films, video games, music releases, merchandise, and THE FIRST SLAM DUNK. The television anime is the natural start for viewers seeking Sakuragi's full beginner-to-player arc; the 2022 film is a companion adaptation centered on a later game rather than a substitute for the complete series.

Behind the scenes

Sakuragi's red hair, outsized self-confidence, and nickname "genius" make him instantly recognizable, but the story consistently asks him to earn improvement through practice. The original manga has been credited with inspiring interest in basketball for many readers and viewers. THE FIRST SLAM DUNK's director is also the manga's creator, an unusually direct creative link between the source and the later film.
