Synopsis

Yuri Katsuki returns to Kyushu after an unsuccessful Grand Prix Final and doubts that he can remain in elite figure skating. When former champion Victor Nikiforov sees a video of Yuri skating one of Victor's programs, Victor arrives to coach him. The new partnership brings Yuri into competition with Russian skater Yuri Plisetsky and a broad international field. The series treats each program as both athletic performance and character expression, tracking how Yuri learns to compete with ambition rather than shame.

Publication history

Yuri!!! on ICE is an original television anime produced by MAPPA and broadcast in 2016. It was created by Mitsurou Kubo and Sayo Yamamoto, and licensed international streaming helped make it a major global title. The television series remains the central animated work. A planned film, ICE ADOLESCENCE, was later formally cancelled by the production committee, so it should not be presented as an upcoming sequel.

Creators

Sayo Yamamoto directed the television series and developed the original story with Mitsurou Kubo, who also provided original character designs and screenplay work. MAPPA animated the series, with Taro Umebayashi and Taku Matsushiba composing the music. The creative team studied skating movement and competitive structure closely enough for programs, costume choices, and score pressure to carry character meaning.

Media expansion

The project includes the twelve-episode television series, soundtrack releases, home video, art and guide books, official goods, live events, and skating-related collaborations. The planned ICE ADOLESCENCE film was cancelled, as confirmed by the official English notice. For viewers, the television series is therefore a self-contained entry rather than the first half of a required film series.

Behind the scenes

There are two prominent characters named Yuri: Japanese skater Yuri Katsuki and Russian skater Yuri Plisetsky, so discussion often uses surnames or the nickname Yurio for clarity. The show received wide international attention for its central relationship and for putting a global skating field on screen. It is not a documentary of real competition rules, but it captures the emotional mix of training, performance, judging, and public expectation.
