Eren Yeager

Overview

Eren Yeager is the protagonist of Hajime Isayama's Attack on Titan and its anime adaptation. Closely connected to Mikasa Ackerman and Armin Arlert since childhood, he wants to see the world beyond the walls. This profile mainly covers his early characterization and developments in the first anime season. His life in Shiganshina is destroyed by the Titan attack that kills his mother. Anger at the Titans and the experience of being unable to save her drive him toward battle. His longing for the outside world, however, predates that loss: he already questions why safety inside the walls should mean accepting a life without the freedom to leave. He graduates fifth from the 104th Cadet Corps. Although high-ranking recruits can join the Military Police in the safer interior, he wants the Survey Corps and its expeditions beyond the walls. The idea that learning to fight Titans can instead become a route away from them troubles him. His choice shows his determination to pursue his own purpose rather than the comfortable path valued by others. During the fighting at Trost, he is revealed to have the ability to become a Titan. He uses it to shield Mikasa and Armin from artillery, but loses control during another operation and attacks Mikasa. Possessing immense strength does not mean he can always direct it safely. His power also makes him a matter of public fear and military dispute. A hearing considers whether the Survey Corps or Military Police should take custody of him. Later, confronted by the Female Titan, he struggles to reconcile the urge to help soldiers immediately with the decisions of his unit. Trusting other people's judgment becomes as important a challenge as rushing into a fight himself. Yuki Kaji voices him in the Japanese anime, and his birthday is March 30. Kurumu Okamiya plays him in the musical's advertised 2024–2025 Japanese return engagements. Eren also appears in the school spin-off Attack on Titan: Junior High; comic details emphasized there, including his love of cheeseburgers, belong to that version and should not automatically be treated as facts about the main continuity.
