Overview

Jet Black is Spike Spiegel's bounty-hunting partner and the owner of the Bebop, the ship that serves as both workplace and home. His official anime profile lists him as 36, with a December 3 birthday. He has a large build, a beard and a mechanical left arm. Unsho Ishizuka voices him in Japanese. Jet previously served with the Intra-Solar System Police, or ISSP. An incident led him to leave policing for bounty hunting, and an injury from that period resulted in parts of his body being mechanized. Alongside investigations, he handles household work and ship maintenance. His interest in bonsai provides another practical, patient activity outside his dangerous profession. The Bebop is a converted interplanetary fishing vessel. Jet's smaller craft, the Hammerhead, is officially classified as a high-powered towing vehicle, with hooks, an anchor and a working hand. It is a different kind of machine from Spike's fighter, reflecting the practical responsibilities of the crew's shipowner. Past events—mild story spoilers: Session 10 brings Jet back to Ganymede and to his former partner Alisa, whose current boyfriend is wanted for a bounty. Session 16 concerns a prisoner transport revolt involving Udai, the killer connected to the loss of Jet's arm. Jet investigates with his former colleague Fad, revisiting the police years when he was known as Black Dog. These cases give the crew's caretaker a personal history beyond his day-to-day responsibilities. Jet also appears in the animated film. Mustafa Shakir plays him in the Netflix live-action adaptation, whose Japanese dub casts Taiten Kusunoki. The Japanese anime performance and the live-action dub therefore have different actors. On Ganymede, Jet apprehends Alisa's boyfriend Rhint and hands him to the police. The case brings a former personal relationship into direct contact with his present work.
