Synopsis

Chiikawa is Nagano's manga about small creatures living their everyday lives. Chiikawa shares meals with friends Hachiware and Usagi and works to earn money for things they want. Their surroundings also contain mysterious beings and danger: a peaceful afternoon is not a guarantee of an easy life. Small pleasures sit alongside everyday frustrations and unexpected difficulties. Chiikawa is kind but timid and sometimes cries when nervous. Optimistic Hachiware helps ease those fears, while the energetic, fearless Usagi brings distinctive cries and unpredictable activity to the group. Their friendship brings together different personalities and responses to the same experiences. The wider cast includes Momonga, who makes a show of being adorable, and Rakko, an exceptionally accomplished hunter. Work includes weeding and monster hunting, with duties assigned by armored figures. Passing a weeding examination can lead to better pay. Yet this world also contains flying sunfish and enormous sweets, placing familiar concerns about work and friendship beside fantastic discoveries. The characters must face frightening situations and help one another as they make their way through it.

Publication history

The original manga began in 2020 as Nagano's posts on Twitter, now X, rather than as a regularly serialized magazine feature. Kodansha's series page identifies Twitter as its publication platform. Its social-media publication history is therefore distinct from the release dates of the collected books. Kodansha released the first collected volume, titled 『ちいかわ なんか小さくてかわいいやつ』 in Japanese, on February 12, 2021. It included newly drawn episodes not previously posted on Twitter, alongside a special edition with an original picture book. A special chapter appeared in Morning's 2021 issue 11, released on February 10, shortly before the book. This marked the series' first appearance in the magazine, not the start of a regular Morning serialization. Volume 8 was released on November 21, 2025, collecting the Siren arc with additional material drawn for the book. That long story had begun appearing on social media in March 2023, illustrating the gap between its original publication and collection in print. The standard edition was available in print and digitally; the special edition with sticky notes and a notebook was print-only. Kodansha specified that the manga content was the same in both editions: the distinction concerned the accompanying items rather than additional story content.

Creators

Nagano is an illustrator whose other work includes 『自分ツッコミくま』 and 『MOGUMOGU食べ歩きくま』. Alongside Chiikawa, Nagano has published character stories featuring bears and work about food outings. Kodansha's author introduction highlights the soft, hand-drawn quality of the illustrations. The traveling Nagano Exhibition, the creator's first exhibition of original artwork, offered a view of that process. In the publisher's introduction to its official art collection, the book's editor explained that visitors could see the analog originals behind manga encountered online. The collection also included a new message from Nagano, presenting a different perspective from the finished comics on a screen. The creator remains involved in animation. Television producer Naoto Shoji described arranging the original manga images into a proposed episode structure, obtaining feedback from Nagano and the director, and then proceeding to storyboards. Questions about dialogue and detailed settings are also checked with Nagano. For the film, Nagano is credited with the original work and screenplay. In an official interview, Nagano described reviewing expressions, gestures, storyboards, and scenes to add or remove. One request concerned Chiikawa reaching for a leaflet: the movement should not look like rudely snatching it away. The supervision therefore covered personality conveyed through movement as well as visual resemblance.

Media expansion

The television anime began on April 4, 2022, within Fuji TV's Mezamashi TV. Doga Kobo produces the animation. The principal Japanese voices are Haruka Aoki as Chiikawa, Makoto Tanaka as Hachiware, and Ari Ozawa as Usagi. Tanaka performs the ending song 「ひとりごつ」 as Hachiware, with lyrics by Nagano and composition and arrangement by Shugo Tokumaru. An official announcement dated September 25, 2026 scheduled 25 revival broadcasts from October 2 through December 25, with new episodes expected to resume in January 2027. The announcement described a combination of terrestrial broadcasts and streaming, including one-week catch-up availability on YouTube, TVer, and FOD. As of October 1, 2026, these remain announced plans rather than completed events. The first feature film, 『映画ちいかわ 人魚の島のひみつ』, opened in Japan on July 24, 2026. Its production differs from the television series: Cypic provides the animation, Kei Oikawa directs, and Toho distributes. It adapts the manga's Siren arc. After accepting an invitation to an island, Chiikawa and friends become involved in a plan to hunt a Siren said to be abducting island residents. Chiikawa Pocket, a smartphone game developed and operated by Applibot, launched on March 27, 2025. It is free to play with in-app purchases on iOS and Android. The company's announcement describes distribution in 43 countries and regions, including Japan and the United States, and a collection of activities designed to bring players into Chiikawa's world. The franchise also extends to physical experiences. Its official information site lists the opening of Chiikawa Park in Tokyo on July 28, 2025, as its first large-scale experiential facility. Alongside themed cafes and shops, it represents an additional way to encounter the fictional world as a physical space.

Behind the scenes

『ちいかわ なんか小さくてかわいいやつ』 won the Grand Prize in the Manga (萬画) category of the 53rd Japan Cartoonists Association Awards, announced on April 12, 2024. The judges highlighted the characters' companionship and efforts to live in a strange, difficult world. Their stated reasons addressed daily life and relationships, not only the appealing character designs. The television episodes are arranged with pacing in mind. Producer Naoto Shoji explained that seasonal stories are timed to suit their season where possible, while gentler food-centered episodes can break up harsher sequences. The adaptation is therefore not simply a matter of transferring each social-media installment into the next broadcast slot. Voice performance creates another adaptation challenge. In a 2022 interview, Usagi's actor Ari Ozawa described the difficulty of the unusual words and chewing sounds, but also said the energetic vocalizations suited the character and felt enjoyable to perform. During her audition, she tried multiple intonations for the character's cries.
