Synopsis

After nuclear war, natural disasters, political failure, and revolution bring Japanese society to collapse, civilization recedes and the archipelago is divided among the rival nations of Yamato, Buoh, and Seii. Aoteru Misumi is a local agricultural officer in rural Ehime, Yamato, whose quiet life is destroyed by an encounter with the regime's powerful home minister. Resolving to build a peaceful country, he travels to Osaka to seek service under Borderland General Mitsuhide Ryumon. Lacking exceptional martial strength, Aoteru advances through knowledge, observation, mapping, and formidable eloquence as the three nations move toward open conflict.

Publication history

Ikka Matsuki's manga began serialization on Shogakukan's MangaONE on November 24, 2021, and has also been distributed through Ura Sunday. Shogakukan published the first collected volume under the Ura Sunday Comics imprint on March 10, 2022. The series developed from a web manga into a wider media property while continuing its account of the struggle to reunify the three successor states.

Creators

Creator Ikka Matsuki was born in 1994 and is from Ehime Prefecture, the region where Aoteru's story begins. Matsuki has described an early fascination with the Chinese Three Kingdoms and the Dynasty Warriors games as a starting point for the work. Rather than fictionalize another country's history, Matsuki chose an unconstrained future Japan, designed the three states around the country's geography, and prepared a detailed fictional chronology before serialization. Matsuki previously created the blind-football manga Bukuro Kicks.

Media expansion

The original MangaONE and Ura Sunday manga was adapted into a stage production presented at Tokyo's Theater H from July 25 to August 3, 2025. Daisuke Nishida wrote and directed the production, with Shohei Hashimoto as Aoteru Misumi; Marvelous described it as the property's first media-mix expansion. A television anime directed by Kazuaki Terasawa and produced by Studio Kafka began worldwide streaming on Prime Video in April 2026, followed by Japanese television broadcast. Amazon's licensed English release uses the title NIPPON SANGOKU: The Three Nations of the Crimson Sun.

Behind the scenes

Matsuki builds many characters from historical figures in China's Three Kingdoms era and Japan's Sengoku period. Aoteru is based in part on the Wei strategist Deng Ai: Matsuki inverted Deng Ai's historical stutter and imagined that figure as an exceptionally fluent speaker. Yoshitsune Asama draws on Zhong Hui. Because the cast is Japanese and predominantly black-haired, Matsuki has discussed distinguishing characters through facial proportions and individual features rather than hair color. The series also places contemporary youth slang in the mouths of older future characters, treating today's speech as the old-fashioned language of its setting.
